Shingle bundle calculator

Three bundles cover a square on standard strip shingles, and that is where most takeoffs stop. The bundles that actually get short on the truck are the other three lines: starter along every eave and rake, cap along every ridge and hip, and enough nails to hit the code minimum of 4 fasteners per strip.

Why three bundles is a floor, not a rule

Three bundles per square holds for 3-tab and for most architectural laminates. Heavy designer lines — the thick, shadow-cut profiles that imitate slate or shake — run four and sometimes five bundles to the square because each shingle is heavier and a bundle can only weigh what a roofer can carry. Starter and cap are not field shingles

Cutting starter from field shingles was standard practice for decades and still happens, but purpose-made starter carries a factory sealant bead along the eave edge, which is exactly where wind uplift starts. Cap cut from 3-tab cracks on a cold day; purpose-made cap is scored to bend. Both are cheap next to a blow-off, and both are usually excluded from a low bid — check for them when you read an estimate.

The nail line is a code line

The building code sets a minimum of 4 fasteners per strip shingle, 12-gauge (0.105 in) shank, 3/8 in head, long enough to penetrate the sheathing by at least 0.75 inch. High-wind zones and steep pitches take six. A gun set too shallow or too deep voids the wind warranty faster than any weather does.
