Three grades, three prices

Asphalt shingles come in three commercial grades and the gap between them is wider than the marketing suggests. Three-tab is a single flat layer with cut-outs. Architectural (laminate) bonds a second layer to the first, giving depth, weight and wind resistance. Designer laminates stack further layers to imitate slate or shake, and they are where the top of the asphalt band lives.

Note the bundle count on the bottom row. Designer profiles are heavy enough that a bundle covers less, so the bundle takeoff changes as well as the rate.

What is inside a per-square rate

An installed per-square rate is roughly 40–60% labour and the balance material, and the material half is not only shingles. It is starter strip along every eave and rake, hip and ridge cap, underlayment across the whole deck, ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and valleys where the climate demands it, drip edge, pipe boots and vent flashing, and nails. Strip those out and the shingle itself is a surprisingly small share.

What moves the number

Four things, in order of size. Local wages, which vary by more than thirty thousand dollars a year between the top and bottom states and land directly in the labour half. Pitch and access, which slow a crew and are priced as a labour premium per square. Tear-off, which is its own line and doubles with a second layer. And season — a roof bought in the October rush prices differently from one bought in February.

Where the extra money actually goes

Moving from 3-tab to architectural on a 21-square roof costs roughly $2,625 more at the bottom of each band. It buys weight, a higher wind rating, a longer warranty and — the part nobody quantifies — a roof that still looks deliberate at year fifteen rather than merely intact. Whether that is worth it is a service-life question, and the answer usually turns on how long you intend to own the house.
