The standard material warranty

Every bundle of architectural shingle from the big three ships with a “limited lifetime” warranty, and nobody has to register it. Keep the contract or the supply-house invoice as proof of purchase. It covers one thing: a manufacturing defect in the shingle. It does not cover the way the shingle was nailed, the flashing around the chimney, or the weather.

“Lifetime” is a defined term, not a promise about the roof. GAF defines it as long as the original owner (or a properly transferred second owner) owns the house, and only on a single-family detached home owned by individuals. Any other owner, such as a company, an HOA or a landlord with an apartment building, gets 40 years. CertainTeed caps “other ownership” at 50 or 40 years depending on the shingle line. Owens Corning’s table says lifetime means “for as long as Owner owns home.”

The non-prorated window is the part that pays

Each maker gives the first years a brand name, and in each case it means the same thing: the manufacturer pays for replacement shingles and the labour to put them on. GAF calls it the Smart Choice Protection Period: 10 years on Timberline shingles under the standard warranty. Owens Corning calls it the TRU PROtection period, the first 10 years. CertainTeed calls it SureStart: 10 years on its lifetime shingles for an individual homeowner.

After that window the warranty becomes materials only, prorated. GAF spells out the maths: for years 11 to 40 the term is deemed to be 600 months, so a claim at 25 years (300 months) is reduced by 300/600, or 50%. From year 41 GAF’s contribution is 20%. Labour is no longer covered at all. A lifetime shingle that fails in year 20 is, in practice, a box of replacement shingles and a bill for the crew.

Tear-off is not in the standard warranty

GAF’s standard warranty says in so many words that it will not pay to tear off or dispose of the old shingles. Owens Corning’s overview marks the standard tier “excludes tear-off and disposal costs.” CertainTeed pays tear-off during SureStart only on its “Lifetime A” lines (Landmark PRO, Landmark Premium, Landmark TL and the designer shingles), not on base Landmark.

That is also why a rated life is not a service life. The asphalt shingle lifespan guide covers what wears a roof out long before a warranty term runs, and the architectural vs 3-tab comparison shows how far the terms drop on a strip shingle. GAF’s 3-tab Royal Sovereign carries a 25-year term with a 5-year non-prorated window.

Enhanced system warranties

The longer warranties are not something a homeowner buys from the manufacturer. They come through a contractor the manufacturer has certified, and only when the roof is built as a system: the maker’s own starter, ridge cap, underlayment, leak barrier or vents alongside its shingles. The reward for that is a non-prorated period that runs 50 years instead of 10, tear-off and disposal paid when a repair needs them, and on the top tiers, cover for the installer’s mistakes.

GAF’s ladder is the clearest. System Plus takes the standard coverage, stretches Smart Choice from 10 to 50 years and adds tear-off and disposal. Silver Pledge adds misapplication cover: 10 years on most Timberline shingles and 15 on Timberline AS II and UHDZ. Golden Pledge, which only a Master Elite contractor can register, makes that misapplication cover non-prorated for 25 years on Timberline HDZ (30 on AS II and UHDZ), with lifetime cover behind it on a single-family home. GAF’s workmanship cover reaches the flashings at valleys, dormers, chimneys and plumbing vents too.

Owens Corning runs three extended tiers. System Protection and Preferred Protection both need a Platinum or Preferred Contractor and give a 50-year TRU PROtection period. Preferred adds 10 years of workmanship. Platinum Protection needs a Platinum Contractor and carries workmanship for the life of the warranty, paid in full for the first 25 years and reduced after that by the age of the roof. All three must be registered by the contractor within 60 days of installation, and must cover the entire structure.

Single-family home owned by individuals, lifetime-class shingles. GAF and Owens Corning figures from their warranty overview pages and August 2026 / April 2026 warranty documents; CertainTeed from its residential warranty effective 1 May 2026.

CertainTeed's extended tiers

CertainTeed offers premium warranties through its credentialed contractors, but the terms were not in its public document library when we checked on 18 October 2026, so they are left out of the table rather than guessed. Ask the contractor for the warranty document itself, not a brochure, before you sign.

Two catches. First, an enhanced warranty that never gets registered is a standard warranty. GAF tells homeowners to call if the registration has not arrived within 60 days of the job finishing. Second, the accessory count is per roof. If the bid lists another brand’s underlayment to save a few dollars a square, the tier can drop. Make the bid name every component and the warranty tier on the roofing estimate template so the substitution shows up before the job, not at claim time.

The contractor’s workmanship warranty

This is the roofer’s own promise to come back and fix their installation, and it is the warranty that matters most in the first few years, because that is when nailing, flashing and sealing mistakes show up. There is no industry standard for it. No code sets a length, and the manufacturers do not set one either. One year, two, five, ten or “lifetime” are all on offer, and the number is only as good as the company behind it.

CertainTeed’s own homeowner brochure puts it plainly: contractor workmanship warranties are typically one year or more, a longer one is not necessarily more valuable, and the intent and ability of the roofer to stand behind it matters more than its length. Its advice is to ask past customers whether the roofer showed up, answered and fixed things.

The two top manufacturer tiers lean on that same idea. Under GAF Golden Pledge and Owens Corning Platinum Protection, an application error discovered or discoverable in the first two years is the installing contractor’s job to repair. The manufacturer steps in only if that contractor is unable or unwilling. So even a manufacturer-backed workmanship warranty runs through the roofer first.

What to write into the contract

The length in years, what it covers (leaks from installation, flashing, ventilation the roofer installed), what it excludes (storm damage, other trades on the roof), whether it transfers to a buyer, and how to make a claim. Then a line saying the work will meet the manufacturer’s installation instructions, since that is what keeps the material warranty intact. The roofing contract template has a warranty clause with both blanks.

Transferable roof warranties

All three makers allow exactly one transfer, from the original owner to the next one. All three also punish a late sale. Sell inside the non-prorated window and the buyer gets the rest of it. Sell after it and the buyer gets two years of prorated, materials-only cover.

For a homeowner selling, the useful paper is the registered warranty certificate, the contract naming the shingle and accessories, and the installation date. Put copies in the closing file so the buyer can file the transfer inside the deadline.

What voids a roof warranty

“Voids the warranty” is usually the wrong word. GAF’s standard warranty says it stays in effect even if the shingles were not installed to its instructions. What it will not pay for is damage caused by that installation. The effect on a claim is much the same, but it means the fight is over cause, and the manufacturer’s inspector decides it. These are the exclusions that actually appear in the documents:

  • Installation off the instructions. GAF excludes improper fastening or application not in strict accordance with its printed instructions when that caused the damage. Owens Corning excludes improper or faulty installation and requires compliance with local building codes as well.
  • Inadequate ventilation. All three exclude it, and it is the one that catches the most roofs. CertainTeed drops shingles on an inadequately ventilated deck to a 10-year warranty with no SureStart. Owens Corning excludes damage from improper or inadequate ventilation and unvented attics. GAF and Owens Corning both state that failing to ventilate is not an “application error,” so even the workmanship tiers will not cover it. Size the intake and exhaust with the attic ventilation calculator before the bid goes out.
  • Going over the old roof. Owens Corning’s System, Preferred and Platinum tiers require a clean deck with all existing roofing removed. CertainTeed’s wind upgrade is void on a roof-over. The overlay vs tear-off comparison weighs that against the money a second layer saves.
  • Other brands’ parts. Owens Corning excludes non-Owens Corning products such as metal work, counterflashing, corroded nails and pipe boots. GAF’s standard warranty does not pay for metal work or flashings, or for underlayment unless a GAF underlayment was itself defective.
  • Weather and impact. Hail, fire, wind above the rated speed, falling branches and foot traffic are excluded. That is an insurance claim, not a warranty claim. See the roofing insurance claim process.
  • Work done later. Owens Corning excludes damage from alterations made after the roof is finished. CertainTeed makes the owner pay to remove and replace anything sitting on the shingles, solar panels included.

Ice dams

GAF excludes ice damming except for leaks in an area covered by its own leak barrier and deck seam tape that are caused by a defect in those products. Installing a manufacturer’s leak barrier at the eaves is part of what keeps a valley or eave leak inside the warranty at all.

Wind and algae warranties

Wind and algae cover sit beside the material warranty with their own terms, and both are where the accessory rules bite hardest. The headline wind speeds are upgraded figures. Each one applies only when the maker’s own starter goes on the eaves and rakes and, for most, its ridge cap goes on the hips and ridges.

GAF covers wind for 15 years. Shingles reach 130 mph only with its “Special Installation”: GAF starter strip at the eaves and rakes plus six nails a shingle, or four on LayerLock-labelled shingles. Without it the cap is 110 mph. LayerLock shingles with at least four qualifying accessories (starter, ridge cap, roof deck protection, and a leak barrier or attic vent) qualify for the WindProven warranty: 15 years with no maximum wind speed, on the shingles only.

Owens Corning gives 15 years of blow-off cover. Duration shingles are warranted to 130 mph, and its overview lists 160 mph when the component requirements are met with starter on both eaves and rakes. On Oakridge, 110 mph is the standard four-nail figure and 130 mph needs six nails plus Owens Corning starter at the eaves and rakes.

CertainTeed lifetime shingles start at 110 mph for 15 years and upgrades to 130 or 160 mph by product, but only with no roof-over, its specified hip and ridge caps and its starter at the eaves and rakes. Its 2026 wind sheet says a roof installed as a full Integrity Roof System qualifies for an unlimited wind velocity warranty.

GAF’s algae remedy is the cost of commercial cleaning, or replacing the stained shingles at its option. It is not a new roof. GAF adds that a StainGuard Plus or Plus PRO roof may get a 15-year non-prorated algae period under an enhanced warranty from a certified contractor.

Checks before you sign

The cheapest time to settle a warranty question is before the bid is signed. Five lines on the paperwork cover most of it.
